Another possible option for you might be VMWare's Fusion as an alternative to Parallels. The reason: Fusion is far less demanding on both the CPU and memory.

I've been testing Fusion intermittently on a MBP with 'only' 2GB's and, so far, it seems to be noticeably smoother overall than Parallels -which was never bad, just never perfect.

In any case, Fusion is free for 30 days so it'd be a painless experiment.
