Someone who has tried hard to examine his own beliefs and think them through will respect the like effort in other people. But it's not how most people acquire or keep their beliefs. Religious or not makes very little difference here.

I agree that people can be "religious" about belief systems that are not formal religions--very little difference, except that the latter cannot fall back on "Because God said so," which is a debate stopper.
