When I was telling my husband about the discussions on the thread over the last couple of days, he said that no one seemed to be acknowledging what you just finally have-- that while religions make a handy vehicle and an easy target to blame per se, it is actually man's basic nature that is at the heart of it all.

As to examining beliefs, people prefer the comfort of absolutism. CHanging is hard. As Churchill said, "I am always willing to learn new things, though I do not always enjoy being taught."

I am waiting to watch all three of the episodes before commenting on the Amanpour. Maybe by then everything will have been said, though, and I won't feel a need to add anything! My husband is going to watch with me, which will make it far more interesting.
