You're on point wrt the money angle. I agree - someone kills your dog, what are your damages? The cost of the dog. The law does not recognize a claim for loss of consortium for a pet (at least last time I checked).

That said, my point was that just because something is your personal property does not mean you can do whatever you want with it without restriction.

Just as I can't burn my own house down, I also can't stake my dog out to a post and do target practice with it. I think that's a reasonable restriction on private property rights.

As for the movement of some nutjobs to give animals the same rights as humans... I won't comment on how absurd that is.
