Analysts said the addition of IP Navigator support will make Ascend's GRF a formidable competitor to Cisco's 7500 series routers.
"I would think that Ascend would be positioned better in terms of performance, greater functional scalability, and congestion
management," said John Morency, principal at The Registry, in Newton, Mass.
"It forces you to use the 7500 as a concentration box," said Bob Berger, president of Internet Bandwidth Development, a consulting company in Saratoga, Calif. As a result, many ISPs are buying the GRF, which combines high-performance switching with a wide variety of interfaces, Berger said.
