Carolyn,
I don't blame the DA for accepting the plea bargain. He probably took into consideration the fact that a trial would have been a costly, ugly, polarizing event that probably would not have added significantly to Vick's jail time. He probably figured that Vick would incur additional penalties from the NFL and the court of public opinion. Vick is going to find it very difficult, if not impossible, to rehabilitate himself. Since the age of six, I have had a dog in my life and I can't even begin to understand how Vick's mind works. I keep thinking about how his brother deliberately stepped on the head of a college player that was on the ground and wonder about his parents. The NFL may not be able to legally bar Vick in the long run, but I would lose all respect for any owner that signed him.
There has ben one good thing that has emerged from this ugly episode. It has raised the national profile of dog fighting and led to a crackdown. There have already been numerous arrests in the Chicago metropolitan area. By the time this is done, Vick will have saved more dogs than he has killed, not that anyone will be nominating him for a "Man of the Year" award. He is scum, pure and simple.
