Believing Christians are scary folks, sort of proto-fascists, who would kill or convert us all to their strange and scary beliefs if they had the chance.
Yeah, no liberals would compare Christians to the Taliban, for example - whoops, it happened on CNN the other night. Maybe I shoulda picked another example.
You could substitute just about any "Them" of your choice and it would be just as true. For instance:
Conservatives who believe Liberals are scary folks, sort of proto-fascists, who would kill or convert us all to their strange and scary beliefs if they had the chance.
Christians who believe Atheists are scary folks, sort of proto-fascists, who would kill or convert us all to their strange and scary beliefs if they had the chance.
For every example of a Liberal who makes wild-ass generalizations about Christians -- or Conservatives or Republicans or whatever -- I'll find you a wild-ass generalization made by somebody from right-of-center about Liberals, Democrats, or whatever. And I won't have to look very far.
It's always about Them. Something to do with our chimpoid DNA, I guess. We have a very primitive habit of banding together in groups (tribes, religions, teams) and pigeonholing our adversaries, real or imagined, into some kind of alter-group; and if we spot one of Them then we bare our teeth at Them and howl and smack the ground with our with our long hairy arms to warn Them away -- but they are doing pretty much the same thing over on their side, so I guess we all just enjoy it.
BTW, Google gives NO RESULTS for the term "chimpoid DNA." I think I'm supposed to get some kind of prize for that. |
