pss....i was wrong about the date ...you are wrong about holy places and colonies en.wikipedia.org No, I am not wrong about the Crusader states. Did I say there were no Crusader states? I said the Crusades were religious wars designed to secure control of the holy places. Once secured, they had to be held. Of course the Crusaders set up states, how else were they to hold them? (btw state-building was something the Normans were very good at). That doesn't mean that the Kingdom of Jerusalem was set up as a profit center for exploiting the local resources (unless you count pilgrimage as a resource) or a place for new European settlement. Those are the motives for colony-building.
