OK, I'll accept that.

But, is it really a 'self-serving interest' to support medical research and development that won't directly benefit you in ANY way... and that most likely won't produce any viable treatments until long after you are dead?

I think not.... (That's sounds more like a humanitarian interest in the welfare of mankind as a whole. :-)
