Shia and Sunnis have different collections of hadith but they both have hadith. Only a tiny fraction of Muslims belong to groups which are Koranites, which reject hadith alltogether.

So for practical purposes, the Shia may not wage Jihad of aggression.

So they define it as defensive. Big deal.
