What about discussing with them their motivations and seeing if they can't be reasonable and perhaps join the better side? Or, maybe, depending on the "terrorist", they are right and one should change one's own mind.

It depends on just which terrorist you mean. The word is quite stretchy. Anyone wronged, such as the people living in Haditha, is likely to see the murderers as terrorists.

Lt Calley would probably be considered an alien terrorist in some quarters.

I consider the IRA terrorists, but they think they are freedom fighters. They are just child-killing murderers [see Omagh and Tower of London] with that dark-hearted evil-doer Gerry Adams as ring-leader.
