Not only is life expectancy far from the only measure of health care, its also the result of many different things.

Also the US has more accidental and violent deaths than many countries further up on the list. Adjust for that and the US looks much better.

In any case a rank doesn't really convey too much. Less than two years separates number 16 and number 39, or number 6 and number 28. In both cases the latter sounds MUCH worse, but the difference, while not insignificant, isn't so huge as "we're number 38", makes it seem.

We aren't near the top, but were solidly in the mainstream range for developed countries. And the only highly populated country thats at the next level up is Japan.
