The growing influx of high-definition televisions in the United States has resulted in one of every five households having a digital video recorder (DVR), compared to one of every 13 homes two years ago, according to a new report.

The number of U.S. households with DVRs will grow above 60 million by 2011, according to the report’s author, Leichtman Research Group Inc. (LGR).

The survey of 1,300 households found that 53% of DVR owners have an HDTV and 45% record upwards of five programs per week.

About 84% of respondents said having the ability to skip commercials was important, but only 8% rated that as the greatest benefit of a DVR.

“The number of U.S. households with DVRs has rapidly increased over the past few years … fueled by a continued push from cable providers offering combination HD/DVR set-top boxes,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principle analyst for LGR. “The growth of DVRs does not mean that the era of live TV viewing has ended.”

Leichtman estimated that 95% of all TV viewing in the United States is still live programming.
