It seems to me that if this were truly a monumental problem, the evidence for it would be self-evident.

"Evidence" that by its very nature is invisible, is not likely to be self-evident.

Remember the MIT study on computer productivity a few years back? Primary conclusion was that despite trillions of dollars spent on computer systems there appeared to be no measurable impact on (economic) productivity figures.

From this study I conclude that we've still not found the appropriate measuring stick to apply to information processing.

Should I assume that you would interpret the MIT study as meaning that all the computer systems we've laid in over the past decades have been a waste of scarce resources?
