Nevada is a good place to be alone with your
thoughts in the middle of a 300 mile drive.

Or hiking--what a treat to find a copse of
aspen or a few fir trees up high.

One Christmas I got myself a permit, strapped on
my cross country skis, and cut a piñon pine.
I don't think the snow was deep enough to need
the skis, but I was yearning for some holiday
spirit. Probably played blackjack that night.

Burning man isn't for me--I've never been to
the Fremont solstice parade up here in Seattle.

But I did like the desert--even more so now that
I'm here surrounded by so much green. And the
dark sky--what a nighttime sky! I'd bundle up and
sit outside on the graveyard shift in Ely. I saw
the Andromeda galaxy, a faint smudge you could
never see here under the marine layer with the
light pollution in Seattle. At least not without a
telescope.

And I saw my brightest meteor in Nevada, a dazzling
green Leonid, near the horizon in the direction of
area 51.
