I believe that if rapid diagnostics are accurate and less expensive than other available tests then the demand for their use will increase. Also, if several companies make the same test, the order will go to the lowest bidder. These labs are definitely being run by economics. I believe the dollar sign is more important than a rapid result to the lab supervisor who chooses exactly which test will be available to the physicians.

I believe your reasoning is very sound. Especially, in an HMO or in a practice where physicians are paid by salary. I do not work for an HMO but 25% of my patients have HMO insurance. At this point they recieve the same care as nonHMO patients because I am still paid by productivity for their care. I believe it is only a matter of time before administrators add a HMO variable to the physician reimbursement equation.
