Microsoft is turning both WordPerfect and SmartSuite into generic brands.

ZDNet Anchordesk has this piece on Office Suites today:

Now Jesse Berst is a notorious Microsoft booster, but what he says has a ring of truth. In corporate environments, Microsoft Office is the only Suite that matters. It has little to do with the quality of the products, but the fact that it is the safe choice.

The Corel boosters on this thread (if there are any left) might want to tell Jesse otherwise. As an ex-WordPerfect user -- my office standardized on Microsoft Office last year -- I can tell you that the transition to Word has been extremely painful. Although I can usually get Word to do what I want it to do, eventually, it is not always apparent how to do it the first, second or even the third time.

So ease of use is a key advantage for WordPerfect. But if Corel is ever going to make any inroads into the corporate market, it is going to need credibility. This means it must be a class act. In this Corel just doesn't cut it, from Cowpland's bombast to the tacky, cut-rate image Corel projects in its advertising.

The WordPerfect brand is depreciating rapidly. I am not sure they will be able to turn it around.
