Heavens no! I just had a lingering infection that set into my jaw. I don't want to sound like a jerk but it really is beyond me how a person my age can land in the hospital for 5 days over a root canal and they neglect to check for an infection in the jaw before I leave? I know it sounds like I'm gearing towards calling a lawyer - not so! Everyone involved did their best to help me but at some level there was a failure that now has resulted in losing part of my jawbone and requires a bone graft. I'm disappointed, think someone should have caught it before now but I love my docs and I know this was NOT intentional. The oral surgeon is a great guy - he's a good Irishmen! I love the guy and would recommend him to anyone. But in the back of my mind I'm wondering if he shouldn't have done more than a visual check after I had been hospitalized for 5 days. Oh well...it is what it is and its better for me to focus my energies on getting better than it is to look for reasons to be disappointed. I'll say this though - its a good thing I had a physical a few weeks ago. I had a high white blood cell count and my doctor called to ask if I was feeling ok. I said I felt fine so he said I must be one of those people who just runs a high WBC count. I sat back and the first thing I thought of was my jaw so I stopped by the Oral Surgeons office last Friday. Had I not done that my jaw would have become so infected that it would have fractured on its own and I would have gotten VERY sick and landed back in the hospital. They may have to put in a steel plate when they do the bone graft but it wounds like all of this can be done from the inside. The last thing I need is to be single AND start acquiring facial scars that make me more unsightly than I already am
