I have a similar problem with my 84 year old dad, only his problem is with spices. If we catch some nice fish he insists on cooking some of them himself, I learned from digestive experience that the correct answer to "would you like it blackened?" is "no thank you." I have a very strong stomach but even I could not endure the effects of his blackened fish fillets. Having been denied blackening he still cooks now and then and puts about 1/8 inch of various and sundry spices on everything, I think he might have lost his sense of taste.
