First Im a fan. I was looking from an opponents view. IF you shut down LT, tie up gates and force rivers to run around, I think its your best chance of winning. IF rivers finds other recievers and they catch the ball, well the offense becomes unbeatable and the defense will have lots of time to rest. "Gates is not the only receiver. Last year Vincent Jackson emerged as SD's go to guy. This year the 6'5" 235 lb receiver will light it up" None are as consistant as gates. they all drop important passes. A little poor play gives really good oppenents (first place schedule remember) opportunities. "You cannot blitz Rivers or LT will simply gain more APY (all purpose yards) receiving on screen plays. " Teams that have shut down LT before (even 5th place teams) by keying on him. In some ways a good blitz does both. Screens work usually only on bad defensive teams. "Merriman always has a "special guy" trying to block him, but that only makes Phillips more dangerous" Maybe. Merriman has not been much of an impact player since he got off the steroids. Im not saying he's been bad. But he no longer looks like JR. He is likley to be the biggist dissappoint on the defense this year. His forte proabley will be a pass rush, thats why I would try to keep him on his side of the line and then let him alone. Phillips? solid player as is merriman I just dont anticipate much running against us. Chargers lack people that cover well. "Sproles will be the needed special teams guy SD fans have been waiting for." I agree. "Weddle is a legitimate S. He will fill D. Edwards shoes. " average rookie, above average press (make that stupendus press). We will see him occassionaly. If he ends up being great he could have more impact then Merriman. "Lastly, Gates...no comment necessary." If you can run, run. If you cant run, throw to gates, If he's tied up and rivers has time, a host of players to choose from. Hence my stop LT, tie up gates and move rivers out of the pocket strategy. 1st place scheudle not a 5th place schedule. Never been more excited about a SD team. See you at the games. "P.S. Watch out for 4 the Padres. Their pitching staff is lights out." Cannon fodder for big hitting teams. Miltons been a huge surprise though. Creates a spark that wasnt there before. Probably the best pitching staff ive seen here and should get us at least into the playoffs.
