Excellent posts everybody. Tell me this merger rumor isn't the sexiest one out there in a long time. The WorldCom/MCI one was fun but this is great.

Someone posted earlier doubts about the WorldCom/MCI merger actually completing...I agree 100%. I think it is highly likely that the deal will unravel. What happens to WorldCom is it doesn't happen?...they gain face. MCI would just continue to look stupid.

Re: this rumored merger of ATT/GTE. I think GTE would lose. GTE has quietly positioned themselves to kick ass in the US telecom market. Not being an RBOC allows them to compete today in both the LD and dialtone markets unlike the RBOC's that have to meet the telecom reform act's requirements market by market before they can sell long haul LD. Also, the RBOC's must allow the LD carriers into their networks before they can sell LD. GTE DOESN'T HAVE TO DO THIS BECAUSE THEY ARE A "LITTLE" INDEPENDENT.

GTE is a monster...approximately $25 Billion in annual sales. AT&T is bigger but they also suck. They are a bureaucratic nightmare with they freaking heads buried in the sand. The icing on their stupidity would be to put that lawyer Zeglis in as the CEO.

If AT&T acquires GTE, GTE stockholders will be happy (I will be happy). But I keep thinking it will be a sellout by GTE and a shame. They really have a chance to dominate US telecom without selling out.
