Your hedge fund acquaintances are an anomaly. Most hedge funds are very long AND very leveraged. They are in serious trouble. AND, they can't unwind their huge leveraged positions without creating a landslide. They are stuck, long, and with dubious assets that will eventually have to be marked to market.
