There is an interesting article in the WSJ about Telefonica de Espana being a bit uneasy with the WCOM-MCIC merger. Reason is that Telefonica is hinging a god bit of it's growth strategy on it's relationship with Brit Tel, and by extension, with MCIC.

HOWEVER, GTE had been very interested in securing the alliance with telefonica that went to MCIC-BT. Maybe Telefonica will reconsider and pair up with GTE, or with WCOM.

I personally own both GTE and WCOM so I would be pleased with either alternative. The key value of Telefonica is it's strong ties to emerging markets in South America with vast poatential.

It sure makes for interesting watching.
