Why are those mission-critical applications working now?

I can make hotel reservations now for the Olympic games in 2000.

I can go to any bank right now and get a loan which extends past 1/1/2000.

I can reset the date on my computer to 1/1/2000, and run an Excel spreadsheet.

There are thousands of existing financial and scientific applications which rely on post millenial (and even pre millenial) date calculations that work just fine.

News flash: The MAJORITY of modern computer hardware and software is "Y2K compliant".
