You have misunderstood. You will notice from Swift's smart alecky writing that the children are not tortured and killed at the hands of their "caregivers". In those days food was the problem, not torture to death in the midst of plenty.

I plead guilty to having thought, in my ignorant youth, that charity should be a state-provided handout to help those unable to help themselves, thereby making help equitable and avoiding successful beggars getting a lot, and the hopeless starving.

What I didn't know at the time, which I learned in my early 20s after experiencing government processes , was that the government would cause a LOT more problems than they would solve.

Now, there are children tortured to death because a lot of people supported increasing welfare payments and no controls. It is hideous. If the welfare payments were stopped, the wish to possess the children as ATM cash flow from government coffers would soon disappear and people would get jobs. Sprogging drug and booze addled infants as a career choice would stop.

No child would go hungry or unclothed as swarms of people would leap to help them. A 3 year old who had been happily growing in the care of adoptive parents was repossessed by his natural mother and was soon mercilessly tortured to death. Being repossessed improved the cash flow to his owners. A little girl was tortured to death by various means including being put in a clothes dryer.

Swift's proposal has got nothing whatsoever to do with the situation in NZ now.
