Kurdistan has pretty much been autonomous since 1991.

They've had their own army since before then, but it was our creation of the "no-fly zones" after the 1991 War that solidified their control.

NOW they want to gain control of the oil fields in their territory to assure their economic sustainability.

In some ways they are our proxies in our attempts to undermine Iran. In other ways they are our protectorates in their disputes with the Turks. Either way they are our PAWNS and we will have to maintain a troop presence there LONG into the future.
