The problem is red state democrats vote on military matters with the GOP much of the time. If they don't they will be vilified in their home states with huge negative ad campaigns calling them traitors. The good news is that next year Dems are likely to sweep the congressional and senate races and gain filibuster proof majorities. Maybe even veto proof. The trend is more progressive but it doesn't happen overnight. Remember just three years ago the country was trending staunchly rightwing, until the Bushies were exposed as lying criminal incompetents.
