I can agree to that. A private boat gives you unlimited freedom. However, you might try the Alaska Marine Highway system out of Bellingham. The ferries are big ships, but they don't manage your time like they do on cruise ships. It's a transportation system, not a tourist business. You might try this book about a 19th century run out of Sitka to Oregon. I started it way back, but never finished it. Read the reviews: amazon.com Once you do it on a private boat, you really don't care to do it any other way.
