Because an independent Gazastan is a complete non-starter, for the reason you just said

Oh, I doubt that. Think about it - if the opportunity to be the father of a new Gaza nation were dropped in the lap of the Hamas leadership, to gain international recognition as the great bringer of peace (to at least the people of Gaza), and for self rule in Gaza (as opposed to being 2nd to the outsider PA leadership) are you really so sure that Hamas leadership could pass that up? It's pretty freaking tempting. Especially when the alternative is to be the pathetic stateless Pal fighter inflicting nothing but suffering and isolation on the Pal people that you lead.

All that the "international community" would have to do to make this appealing to the people of Gaza is to offer them more financial support than they receive today from the enemies of Israel (Saudi, Iran). I'd think the people/leadership of Gaza would follow the money, and would eagerly jump on the idea of not being Saudi-Iranian pawns in a losing endless struggle against Israel.

It wouldn't be as simple as I'm making it out to be, but it does seem a better approach than the current "bolster the one state" Pal solution, which is just a hell of a lot harder to accomplish. Basically, Israel should try to "divide and conquer" the Palestinian anti-Israel value system. Creation of a viable independent Gazastan would be a great thing for Israel, so why aren't they pursuing it?

If it's impossible to get Gaza to recognize Israel's right to exist, then its gotta be impossible to get the one Pal state to do so.
