don't remember all that hard work as a kid... once or twice a summer we would go down to the beach at low tide. walk along and where a an air hole popped up in the sand we dug with a clam fork or pitch fork. the little necks are not far down no more than six inches as i remember... we would put a bucket together for a neighborhood kid's mother who took us down. Never ate them until in high school. It would take about an hour to fill up a bucket of clams in the 50's. they closed down the whole area because of red tide..
