Again your looking for some sort of discount plan, not insurance.

I think that's the most problematic aspect of trying to discuss this issue. There's a difference between insurance and packaged health care plans. Unfortunately, the former has morphed into the latter so the distinction has been lost so we call both formats "insurance," which is confusing. And it makes it hard to introduce actual insurance products into the market. They come off looking like crummy health care plans.

I was just pointing out how tires can be expensive. As can many other things that people buy on a regular or semi-regular basis.

Lots of things are expensive. I pay $225 every four months to have my teeth cleaned. I plan to take my teeth with me to the grave, unlike my father who has none. So I pay it. I paid $35 this morning to get my car started. Emergencies happen. At least I didn't need a tow.

Some people carry insurance for cars that won't start. When the Feds came out with dental insurance for the first time last year, I took a quick look. The plans worked backwards from insurance. They pay for the little things but top out at a thousand dollars a year. If you need three crowns in one year, which my dentist keeps telling me I do, the "insurance" is useless. All it does is even out the payments for the cleanings and the occasional filling. I guess that's fine for folks on tight budgets but it isn't a very good value.
