There is a lot of activity in the Railroad industry today. The news of the Canadian Pacific building track all over the plains states came out of the blue sky to me. And the route they propose will get them right into the Powder River Basin coal fields.

It is time to buy real estate in Mule Junction WY the southern gateway to the Black Hills. When I drive the family to the Mt Rushmore Park, we always go via Mule Junction one of the friendliest towns in the state.

As a aside, if it was not for the BNSF, the Kansas City Southern, and the UP; the Canadian Pacific and the Canadian National Railways would own all the track west of Ohio. This may seem silly, but I believe Americans pay no attention to the RRs because most of the RRs we grew up with have merged into these Canadian giants. Good thing we are still on the case.

I continue to hold RAIL although the replacement cycle topped out last year in 2006. This new development should help RAIL when the track is complete and the CP needs coal cars to transport the coal to the power plants back east. Keep in mind RAIL is a hold because its profitable, pays a dividend, its customers are it fat times, and appears to be run efficiently.

And remember coals still fires more than half the power plants in America. I got this chart from "Rocky Mtn New" a couple of years ago, but I will do current research on power generation and post the new findings.

% of electric plants
type of fuel powered by this source

Coal 54.00%
Nuclear 22.00%
Natural gas 13.00%
Renewable 9.00%
Petroleum 3.00%
101.00% rounding error somewhere

The big picture favors coal transportation.
