Schumer disses the troops

My Washington bureau chief (one of them) is pissed at Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York for dissing the troops. Schumer took the floor to harangue the administration. Fine. Then he said:

“And let me be clear, the violence in Anbar has gone down despite the surge, not because of the surge. The inability of American soldiers to protect these tribes from al Qaeda said to these tribes we have to fight al Qaeda ourselves. It wasn’t that the surge brought peace here. It was that the warlords took peace here, created a temporary peace here.”
Schumer heads the Democratic Senate campaign for 2008.

Remember when James Clyburn of the South Carolina, the No. 3 Democrat in the House, said that good news from Iraq would be bad news from the Democrats?

Small wonder Schumer wants to downplay the success of our military in Iraq. For shame.

Here is the video.

UPDATE: And let me point out that Schumer voted for this war. He sent the troops to Iraq. Now he derides their achievements. The man has no shame.
