I sure wouldn't lean my vote to Thompson just on his L&O exposure. There's gotta be something more. The L&O episode I saw today had McCoy prosecuting a guy who chased a shooter, who then caused a fatal accident. The guy got scared and ran off, so McCoy treated him as a vigilante because he was coming home from a deer hunting trip and had a firearm with him. Thompson's character lent a little objectivity, but not enough. I don't know how much say he has over the script. I thought Giuliani had a good line in the 'debate' where he complimented Thompson for playing 'his' part well. Giuliani is too much gun control for me. I like Thompson because he's not stumbling all over himself running for president. That's one of my litmus tests: They have to be drafted by the people to run.
