I think the melamine in the pet food and the lead on the kid's toys, etc., etc., etc., was a real eye-opener to a lot of people.

Not just the mistakes, but the crappy attitude about them.

PRC needs to hire a PR firm, although given Chinese culture of cursing out people with valid complaints, it prolly won't do any good.

Japanese culture of taking responsibility for your mistakes is a lot more acceptable to US culture.

But the point of that article, that high-end goods, are better made in the US is what Jay's missing.

I recently shopped for new household goods for both sons as they both moved into apartments in August, and was horrified at the crappy things like mop buckets and laundry baskets being imported from China and sold in WalMart.

We buy Rubbermaid, WalMart didn't have Rubbermaid.

OTOH, we also buy Oxo, and Oxo is made in PRC and/or Taiwan and that's well made, so it's not China, per se, it's some kind of cost-cutting vs. value decision tree that's broken down.

(As proof that this is not political, US cars are famously worse made than Japanese, and the US car industry is suffering for it.)
