After WWII the Japanese learned modern quality concepts from two American experts: W. Edwards Deming and Joseph Juran. I remember that in the 1950s Japan was still producing cheap junk like plastic toys, but by the 1970s it was flooding US markets with fabulous stuff like autos, cameras, and bike parts.

I suppose there is a lesson there for the Chinese, if they are not too proud to learn it.
