Cisco's Granite Product Delay Is Fodder for Rivals, Paper Says

New York, Oct. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Cisco Systems Inc.'s
Granite Systems Inc. unit has yet to complete a much anticipated
Gigabit Ethernet technology product, and Cisco's rivals say the
delay is proof the company has lost its edge, the Wall Street
Journal reported in its "Corporate Focus" column. The delay is
spurring speculation that Cisco is having problems with Granite's
networking technology and is looking for another Gigabit Ethernet
company to purchase, meaning it's lost its $220 million
investment in Granite. Cisco said the reason it hasn't started
shipping any Granite products is because universal standards for
Gigabit Ethernet haven't been completed, while critics say the
standards are essentially finished and that the explanation
"doesn't carry much weight," the paper reported.

Many networking companies are racing to gain a lead in
Gigabit Ethernet technology, which sends information over
networks at 100 times the speed of conventional Ethernet, before
a universal standard is set for the technology.
