The Dell of the 1990s was a superb manufacturer, not just a marketing model. That is what was lost as the company gave up building it's own laptops, just as the customer base was moving in that direction. So Dell was left with selling stuff on the internet that they bought from asian manufacturers. That business model was easily copied.
