This fits into the exact strategy I had outlined a while back.
The reason Metrowerks added support for the MIPS chip was to support
embedded systems. The MIPS core is one of the most heavily licensed
CPU cores. I believe it is the core used in the PlayStation. It is
also the core that is used in Nintendo's upcoming, Ultra64 system.
The neatest thing about these small niches is the total lack of
competition. Sony makes systems for developing PlayStation games
because they have to have games to sell PlayStation boxes. I doubt
that they want to be in the development technologies business. With
Metrowerks powerful and flexible architecture, they can relatively
easily and cheaply provide Sony with an extremely nice development
environment. It is good for Sony, good for PlayStation developers,
and good for Metrowerks.
