Oprah Raises $3 Mil For Barack
LIBERTAS BLOG
— Dirty Harry @ 11:09 am

Will this give him a chance against the Clinton machine?

"I haven't been actively engaged before because there hasn't been anything to be actively engaged in. But I am engaged now to make Barack Obama the next president of the United States," a source said Winfrey told the crowd just before the concert, starring Stevie Wonder.

Introducing Obama, Winfrey said that "nobody can stand in the way of destiny." …

The most important VIPs got to drive right up to the mansion, with most of the estimated 1,500 attendees who either gave or raised $2,300 shuttled by bus to Winfrey's from the Earl Warren Showgrounds eight miles away in Santa Barbara."

A friend of mine has a significant other who works pretty closely with Obama. Both are extremely nice people and we respect each other's opinions, but my well-intentioned warnings fall on deaf ears. I try to explain that the zeitgeist and the dream that they want Obama to be means nothing when you're up against the Clintons. Because the Clintons are ruthless and so inherently evil when it comes to winning that they will stop at nothing to re-ascend to a power they feel they're entitled to.

I say, "Remember Monica Lewinsky." Remember what happened to her immediately after the story of her affair first broke and Clinton was still lying about it. Remember the ruthless machine that instantly kicked into gear to destroy her. People seem to forget that until Lewinsky put forth the dress with the DNA an all-out campaign had been launched to paint her as a stalker and worse.

Because Drudge had shamed the liberal media into breaking the story they were all to eager accomplices in painting this young woman as a near-psycho through interviews with opportunistic ex-boyfriends and scores of unnamed sources. And it was obvious this was an orchestrated character assassination because as soon as the dress appeared it all came to a screeching halt. It had to. With the dress the Clinton White House knew that now their only hope was to kiss up to Lewinsky in the hope she'd do as little damage as possible.

Personally, I think Obama would be a worse president than Hillary but he seems like a nice enough guy, so I feel sorry for whatever's in store for him should he look like a contender in the early battleground states. They will destroy him.

Jon Voight Interview

— Dirty Harry @ 10:28 am

Box Office Mojo wasn't all that interested in getting into Voight's politics, but he managed to have his say:

Box Office Mojo: Then you did Coming Home starring Jane Fonda—

Jon Voight:—when we worked together we had a nice relationship. But my politics were different. I was very close to the [Vietnam War veterans] at that time and I wanted to represent veterans. There are many sides and there is that sorrowful side [depicted in the movie]—which is real—but if I were to do that movie today I would perhaps speak about the aspect of liberating nations."

One of the benefits of the current Iraq War debate over "what next" — which Bush is winning handily right now — has been a second look at the Vietnam War. Liberals have always held the high ground with respects to whether Vietnam was just, but this lulled them into a trap. They didn't expect their using of Vietnam as an allegory for Iraq would backfire, but it has. This new discussion conservatives are finally entering into over America's disgraceful abandonment of South Vietnam and its horrific consequences was not something the left expected. And not only has bringing Vietnam to the table backfired for them in reference to Iraq it's also taken some of the sheen off their holy grail of Vietnam.

Since studying the war I've told anyone willing to listen or foolish enough to debate that good people can disagree over whether or not John F. Kennedy should've gotten us into that war, but the pullout and those who backed it have blood on their hands. 2.5 million peoples worth of blood. It's maddening to see the left get away with pretending our withdrawal was some sort of moral "victory" when it was just the opposite. Good people like Voight can look back differently. The others can't wait to see it happen again.

For the record, I think Coming Home is an outstanding film. There's a lot to resent about it politically but it harkens from an era when liberals actually knew how to make great liberal films.
