My Mind Is Made Up, Don't Confuse Me With the Facts

The Democrats' pre-emptive attack on General David Petraeus, and his yet-unseen report to Congress, is really pretty stunning. The New York Times and other liberal media outlets have led the way; this morning, Joe Biden continued the attack on Meet the Press:

"President Bush's war strategy is failing and the top military commander in Iraq is "dead flat wrong" for warning against major changes, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said Sunday.

Ahead of two days of crucial testimony by Bush's leading military and political advisers on Iraq, Sen. Joseph Biden indicated that he and other Democrats would persist in efforts to set target dates for bringing troops home.

"The reality is that although there's been some mild security progress, there is in fact no security in Baghdad or Anbar province where I was dealing with the most serious problem, sectarian violence," said Biden, a 2008 presidential candidate who recently returned from Iraq."

Petraeus will testify before Biden's Senate Foreign Relations Committee tomorrow. But, hey, why wait to hear what he has to say when you already know he's "dead flat wrong"? The bottom line is that the Democrats have irrevocably committed themselves to defeat, and, since it is politically impossible (i.e., unrewarding) for them to change their minds, the facts on the ground in Iraq no longer matter.

UPDATE: One of the top leaders of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Mohammad al-Afri (who I assume is from Algeria, Morocco or elsewhere in Africa) has been killed by an air strike near Mosul. Al-Afri organized the bombings that killed over 400 members of the Yazidi sect last month. Such developments, however, are of no interest to Biden and his fellow Democrats.
