re: "The subjectmarks.apsx font is still quite legible, and actually works well, since this is a page where one is reading for recognition, not comprehension."
I agree here, with emphasis on the last point: "since this is a page where one is reading for recognition, not comprehension". The "small fonts" complaint, I think, could be alleviated by increased leading, not font size. ("leading" being a typographic concept not necessarily heard of by most readers, but certainly *visually percepted*, despite the geeky lingo.)
Would introduce to the subjectmark text class, the attribute, " line-height: ##px; ".... somewhere between 15 to 18, the increased white-space between lines keeps them from visually bleeding into each other (and looks a little more elegant). A couple test versions with that little line could settle the matter. "Bigger" (re: legibility) isn't always in the font SiZe ... it's in the way that you do it ... (leading, or bold, or not bold, caps/small-caps, serif-choices, etc...). Just ask my sister!
Perhaps the "small fonts" are really saying "need more contrastible legibility" though it may not be nominally apparent. |
