Charter's idea of drinking water with your food is good. You might also look at the way you eat your food. Are you 'chugging' food without giving it time to get down your throat? It then knots up in your esophagus.

I suffer from that kind of thing if I let my mind wander from the task of eating. I also keep a full glass of water near by and if I feel a bit of tightness I drink a few swallows of water to flush my esophagus. But the key is just keeping my mind on the eating of the food and making sure I don't keep forcing food down when things have not had a chance to work their way fully into my stomach. Long periods of chewing with each bite can also help--the smaller pieces and added saliva lubricate the food as it moves down your throat.

These are all kind of minor recommendations, but often just taking your time is the answer, and it beats having an operation.

hope you find some non invasive remedy.
