Got an interesting email from someone who just returned from a week's vacation in London and had to face down the value of the dollar while there. After reading it, I wondered why the U.S. isn't inundated with "guests" from Europe...or maybe we are and I just don't know it.
Here's an excerpt from the email..... ______________ The trip was interesting...............The currency was fairly easy to cope with—all we had to do was double the amounts on the price tags to come up with a comparable dollar amount and then add 17.5% in value added taxes on top of it in computing how much we were spending.
An interesting thing happened at Heathrow upon our arrival. Most of our flight was populated by British citizens, and we were substantially delayed going through “Immigration”, which had only two officers working a huge number of incoming flights, including what seemed to be a bunch from India.
To make a long story short, by the time we got through Immigration and were allowed to go pick up our luggage, the luggage pickup area was virtually empty. While waiting for one of our bags, I noticed that there was a man standing a few feet from me holding a three or four-year-old girl. I glanced at him, and then had to sneak a look at him again, because it was Paul McCartney. Sir Paul seemed oblivious to the attention.
In any event, it looks like Sir Paul does not travel with an entourage, and only had, in addition to what I presume was his daughter by Heather Mills, a female companion that seemed to be an assistant or a nanny. Last seen, Sir Paul was trudging off to customs pushing his own luggage cart after depositing his little girl on top of the luggage on the cart. He is aging, but looks better in person than he does in photographs. |
