I was listening to Robert Reich plugging his new book, Super Capitalism, on NPR today. Now Reich is an uber-liberal, nothing new there. When I heard him recommend an end to the taxing of corporations I perked up, surprised - then I heard him say that the shareholders should be taxed instead. Well dividends are already taxed but this would have a few consequences, I suppose.

But that's really neither here nor there. What really surprised me about the Reich interview was my own reaction to it. I listened to Reich describe how the nature of the economy and the political system has changed from what he regards as the relatively halcyon days of the 1950s and 1960s, and what regulations he recommends implementing to try to return today's capitalism to something more like the former state of affairs.

While I listened, I felt a stab of surprise that Reich was describing the US economy and political system in a way I could recognize as harmonious with my understanding of its reality, even if I disagreed with almost all of his recommendations. It occurred to me that I no longer expect liberals to argue from rational premises at all.

After the last four years, I expect them to argue from premises that are provably untrue - Bush deliberately lied about WMDs! Bush did 9/11! It's all for Halliburton! Karl Rove hired the Swiftvets! Karl Rove outed Valerie Plame! Al Qaeda is not in Iraq! The Surge has failed! etc and so forth.

Sad, really.
