Nadine, the same can be said any religion.......scripture is open to interpretation. Its people that decide the directiion of a religion... Rubbish. People don't wake up one morning and overturn their received theology, any more than you woke up this morning and rewrote the American Constitution. Some theological systems are open to interpretation, but others are literal-minded. Anybody who tries single-handedly to open a literal-minded system up to a new interpretation is liable to find himself burned at the stake as a heretic. They don't change easily or quickly. Cf. The European Wars of Religion. The dominant schools in today's Islam (thanks in no small part to Saudi money) are all literal-minded. They are not all preaching violence, but neither are they open to interpretation. You didn't bother to listen to interview, did you?
