Dear Robert:

You can stick any series CPU into a single socket. Heck HP's 585DL has four processor cards each with a single socket and 8 DDR2 DIMM slots. Guess what Opteron CPU they put in them? Thats right, Opteron 82xx series and now Opteron 83xx series CPUs.

Thus the number of sockets does not imply the number of cHT links needed to be active. In fact, all cHT means is that a coherent layer is placed above the actual physical HT link. I strongly suspect that all HT links can be made to be cHT links, but the packaging limits it, likely with a fusible link somewhere.

Pete

PS: Given the sales volume to and prestige carried by Cray, AMD would custom make the CPU packages to them. You want unbuffered memory to be used? Sure we can give you that. Want the single link to be CHT capable? Sure, will do. You want it on a AM2+ package? Sure no problem.
