I was at the Manila airport in the 90's and standing by the entry to the tarmac. There was a fancy new metal detector and burly security guard there. A man walked through with a 45 revolver in a belt holster and nothing happened. I looked at the guard quizzically. He noticed my concern and said, "it's ok, he's an officer" to which I replied "the metal detector didn't even go off". He didn't do anything about that minor detail so I didn't bother to remove my keys before going through.
