Tom Friedman had it right today. Regardless of what we do, when we leave there will be intra and inter religious and tribal fighting. Our presence at least on the sunni side helps stabilize the situation. Will an extended stay for the US stabilize the country of Iraq? Nope. If we stay there may be less violence when we leave but at what cost to the US in terms of casualties, our reputation not to mention national treasure. When we leave they will go at it. Biden is right. They need to be 3 autonomous areas if not 3 states. Maybe what our policy should be now is to leave when al quaeda in iraq is largely neutralized. Our play now is to leave when shiaa militias are largely neutralized. Surge can do the former successfully but not the latter. No way Maliki or next guy can reign in the shia militias. And there is the crux of the problem. So given that al quaeda has been beat back we should go. We should give the tribal guys the wherewithall to resist al quaeda return. We can even help militarily in this regard from base areas---bombing, special forces etc but not in a general war against shia militia and iran.
