What you're overlooking is that the surge had nothing to do with the "success" in Anbar.

You keep saying this, and keep quoting a few liberal reporters as backup. The US military AND the NIE AND the Anbar sheiks say different. The US military has been trying to flip the sheikhs for a long time too. Petreaus was specifically asked if the surge helped, and he said yes, maybe it could have been done without it, but the new strategy and the more men helped make up minds, get momentum, and hand out money too.

What is so hard to believe that when you decide you have had enough of living under a ruthless organization that has killed your father and 3 brothers, as happened to one sheikh, you look around carefully at the strength of potential allies before making the jump?
